Before any work can begin on enhancing
the safety process, a clear understanding of the safety
process that is currently in effect at the company must
be obtained. To obtain this understanding, a team of consultants
will spend five days on-site conducting employee interviews,
reviewing safety rules and procedures, observing employees
in the workplace, reviewing past incidents that have occurred,
and meeting with the safety committee. The information
gathered by the consultants will provide them with the
baseline information required to populate the data fields
in the B.A.S.E. software.
The first step in the process will
be to interview the plant managers and site supervisors
to determine their understanding, involvement, and commitment
to the safety process. The second step will be to interview
several employees at each site to determine if they share
the same views on health and safety as senior management.
During the employee interviews, Skills Surveys will be
used to reflect the employees' understanding of the safety
process. The final step in Phase I will be to observe
employees and contractors during their daily activities.
These observations will be recorded in the B.A.S.E. behavioral
database and constitute the baseline information for the
B.A.S.E. process. During this final step, the observation
step, the consultants will also take a number of pictures
to be used during the
next phase.
